Drop the file. We say what it is.

What we read, what we refused and why, and one file back.

  • A site's PDFs become one report, cited to the page.
  • A permit number becomes the limits EPA holds for it.
  • A species list becomes its species at risk, by act and edition.
  • An occurrence table becomes a Darwin Core archive.
  • A lab report becomes a results table, cited to the page.

Or type a permit number, or paste names.

Also screened, each cited by its edition when it answers: the US Endangered Species Act (wildlife and plants); the UK Wildlife and Countryside Act (Schedules 1, 5 and 8) and Habitats Regulations; the EU Birds Directive (Annex I) and Habitats Directive (Annexes II, IV and V); Canada's Migratory Birds Convention Act; British Columbia, Newfoundland and Labrador, the Northwest Territories, Saskatchewan and Yukon; and Québec's list of species likely to be designated, which protects nothing by itself.

▸ What an edition means

A list screened last year is not screened today. The last three rows are assessments, not laws: each is an expert judgement of risk, not a protection and not a statement about your site. IUCN's category is global, read from the GBIF-hosted copy of Red List version 2026-1 under IUCN terms of use; COSEWIC assesses and the Governor in Council lists, so a COSEWIC status is not a Schedule 1 listing.

▸ What else it does, and where it stops

Two more things the door does. They are not yet announced, so they have no entrance of their own here yet — and nothing below is a promise about your file.

  • audit an archive you have already published, and say what GBIF indexes anyway
  • the IFC PS6 names a lender's reviewer asks for

Where it stops:

  • our species registers are Canadian, US, UK, EU and global — a list from elsewhere is told so rather than measured against the wrong law
▸ What it will not do
  • Publishing on GBIF for you: we hand you the archive and its eml.xml; registering it takes a publishing organisation endorsed by a GBIF node.
  • People's names and contacts: we say which columns carry them and where each would go; you decide.
  • Keeping a signed-in drop: without an account we keep what we read to teach the reader, names and contacts removed first and a protected species' coordinates coarsened to about 10 km, never republished.
▸ Formats

CSV · Excel · PDF · Darwin Core · shapefile · GeoPackage · GeoJSON · KML · DXF · a zip of any of them

Anything else, we say so in 30 seconds and charge nothing.

▸ An archive with no eml.xml

GBIF wants five facts before it reads a row. Drop your eml.xml or archive and we say what fails against GBIF’s own profile — and which of those GBIF indexes anyway. Answer what is left and take the document.
